When my great friend Jen told me the extraordinary story about her son Bert, it was so incredible it made me cry! And when I heard it, I just knew that I wanted to capture it in a tiny, magical miniature.
While travelling around Australia, Bert (not a dolphin) was playing football with a friend on one of those long, white, deserted beaches typical of the east coast. The ball ended up in the ocean, and Bert went in to retrieve it. He got caught in a rip tide and began to be pummelled by the surf, and pulled under water. With his friend helpless on the deserted beach, all seemed lost, and Bert knew it. He fought frantically to find a way out as both the water and a sense of panic overcame him. Then, a gentle force on his left side pushed him back onto the beach. It was a dolphin - gently pushing him to safety.
Earlier, Bert and his friend had seen a pod of dolphins in the water, but they never imagined one would save his life. When Jen had the honor of sitting next to Sir David Attenborough, he shared that it’s well-known that dolphins can pick up on human fear frequencies and often come to the rescue.
I created Bert the Dolphin to celebrate this incredible story and to act as a daily reminder of that extraordinary day. Encrusted with blue
and featuring an articulated tail, he mimics the playfulness of dolphins in the water. He is perfect for summer.
But what I love about
is that they don’t always need a fantastical story. Some of my favourite charms are based on uncomplicated, yet treasured memories or moments. By capturing them in charm form, they become something even more special.
